Whatever social class you come from, your life rythm is scaned by the meals, and cooking represents a major activity sector in the Middle Ages. Consumption never reached peaks as high as it did in the XIVth and XVth centuries.
A daily intake of 500 g of meat and 1kg of bread per person is common. The great number of sources bear witness to this appetite for land food people had in the Middle Ages.
Texts, objects and images enable us to give a picture of the eating pleasures and of their importance
This exhibition is accessible every day, from April 1st till August 31st without bprice supplement.
In partneship with "Les Amis de la Tour Jean sans Peur", from Paris

In Belgium, the Law of the 1st of July 1879 founded secular schools. The confessional aspect varied according to the changes of government. Its obligatory aspect did set up only slowly.
The pupils' notebooks bear witness to the evolution of the instruction and of the society since then.
At first, we wanted to show you only the covers of the notebooks.
But when we opened our oldest notebook, which is dated back to 1883, we couldn't resist to show you the writing we admire, as it is regular and perfect from to first page to the last one; Those notebooks served many years.
The themes which are developped by the covers correspond to the teached matters: history, geography, science, technics... the great events of the XXth Century...
Sometimes, they also take advertising, educational or moralising aspects.
The back is dedicated to a comment about the cover, or it is often decorated with a multiplication table.
The evolution of the colours and of the design enable us to date the notebooks quite correctly
A discovery for the youngest ones and nostalgy for the oldest ones.
